Senior School Selection

The Kenyan education system is transitioning to the Competency-Based Education (CBE), which significantly impacts how students choose and are placed into senior schools. Here's a breakdown of how to make choices for senior schools in Kenya under the CBE framework:

1. Understand the CBE Pathways and Learning  Area Combinations:

Under CBE, senior schools will no longer be categorized as national, extra-county, county, or sub-county. Instead, they will be classified based on the pathways they offer:

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Pathway: This is a compulsory pathway in all senior schools. It has the following tracks

a)Pure Sciences

b) Applied Sciences

c) Technical Studies.

Social Sciences Pathway

This has two tracks, namely:

a) Languages and Literature

b) Humanities and Business Studies

Arts and Sports Science Pathway:

With the following tracks

a) Arts

b) Sports

Students will choose one pathway and then select three Learning Area combinations within that pathway. Each Learning Area combination will be linked to a potential career path.

2. Consider the Learner's Interests, Talents, and Aptitude:

The CBE emphasizes a learner-centered approach. The selection process is no longer solely about academic performance in a single exam. Key factors now include:

Student's Interests and Talents: What is the student passionate about? What are their natural abilities? The Ministry of Education plans to administer questionnaires to Grade 9 learners to record their interests, talents, and personality to help guide placement.

Academic Performance: While not the sole determinant, academic performance still plays a significant role. Placement is guided by strengths and assessments performance in relevant areas, along with expressed interests. The Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) (60% weight) and School-Based Assessments (SBAs) from Grades Seven and Eight (20% each) will determine placement.

Psychometric Tests: These tests will assess aptitude, interest, and talent identification.

3. Schools and Their Offerings:

Pathway Availability: Schools will be categorized as "Triple Pathway Schools" (offering all three pathways) or "Dual Pathway Schools" (offering STEM and one other pathway). Identify schools that offer the pathways and specific Learning Area combinations aligned with the student's interests.

Facilities and Resources: Consider the facilities and resources available for the chosen pathway. For example, a student interested in STEM might look for a school with well-equipped science labs, while a student interested in arts might look for schools with strong arts programs and facilities.

School Culture and Environment: The "vibe" of a school can greatly impact a student's experience. If possible, visit schools or attend open days to get a feel for their culture. Consider factors like safety, extracurricular activities, and overall support for students.

Location: Proximity to home can be an important factor for day scholars, while boarding schools offer a different experience. The CBE policy aims to place students in schools close to their home communities where possible.

4. The Selection Process (Automated System):

The selection process for senior schools is done through an automated online platform Senior School Selection . Here's a general overview of the steps:

Guidance from Junior Schools: Junior schools play a crucial role in guiding learners through the selection process, including providing information sessions about pathway options.

Pathway and Subject Combination Selection: The learner, with guidance from parents/guardians and school administrators, will select one learning pathway and three Learning Area combinations within that pathway.

School Choices: For every Learning Area combination selected, the learner will choose four schools, totaling 12 schools in most cases. These schools are categorized into clusters (e.g., day schools in their area of residence, boarding schools within their home county, and boarding schools outside their county).

Submission: The choices are submitted through the automated system.

Placement: Placement is then determined by a blend of academic performance (KJSEA and SBAs), student choices, and practical considerations like school capacity and location. Equity and diversity measures are also enforced.

5. Important Considerations for Parents/Guardians:

Active Involvement: Parents are encouraged to be actively involved in the selection process, discussing options with their children and understanding the guidelines.

Transparency and Readiness: While the Ministry of Education aims for a fair and transparent process, parents should be aware of ongoing discussions regarding transparency and school readiness.

Special Needs: Learners with special needs are allowed to pick fewer schools, focusing on institutions that offer appropriate support.

Admission Requirements (for private schools): For private senior schools, additional admission requirements may include entrance tests, interviews, previous academic reports, and financial commitments (tuition fees).

By carefully considering these factors and engaging with the guidance provided by the Ministry of Education and junior schools, students and parents can make informed choices for senior school in Kenya under the CBE framework.
